The Seminole Tribe of Florida (STOF) is an Indian tribe formally recognized by the United States of America, and like all such tribes, STOF has the right under Federal laws such as the National Historic Preservation Act to comment on Federal activities which could affect its heritage. In addition, on October 1, 2006, an agreement with the National Park Service empowered the THPO of STOF to fulfill preservation responsibilities that formerly were handled by the State Historic Preservation Office in Tallahassee. The Compliance Review Section of THPO annually receives more than 3,000 requests to review Federal projects from Florida and a dozen other states.
Responsibilities of Office
-
Assist the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer with the review of Federal projects outside STOF reservations (mainly Florida and the Southeast) which could affect the sites of Seminole people or their ancestors
-
Assist the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer in enforcing the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) on behalf of the Seminole people
Review archaeological reports of the Tribal Archaeology Section of THPO for completeness and accuracy
